“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”~Matthew 7:23-25

Over the next several months we will be discussing principles that serve as the foundation of our lives. Our hope is that these principles will not simply be “self-improvement tips” but rather the catalyst for transformation in your life. Feel free to join in our discussion, sharing your struggles and successes.

Foundation Principle 1: True transformation is inward and restructures the foundation of our lives.

Life is not about self-improvement, it’s about transformation. Improvement makes alterations without necessarily disturbing the foundation of something. The alterations are primarily on the surface without significant depth. For example, when a home is remodeled, only the visible parts are altered to improve its appearance but the foundation remains the same. When we try to improve ourselves by depending on and using our own strength and wisdom, there’s usually only moderate alterations in our behavior which gives an appearance of change but the true nature of our heart stays the same– it has not been transformed.

Transformation, on the other hand, restructures the very foundation and creates something entirely new. Let’s think about this using the idea of ‘Extreme Home Makeover’—the house is totally demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. There’s no trace of the old house because it’s been destroyed. When we’re initially transformed in spirit (born again) and continually transformed by the renewing of our minds (our souls), the person we used to be on the inside no longer exists. We are now a new creation– the person God originally created for relationship. Now it’s your turn.

Which “self-improvement” tactics have you attempted? What was the result?

In which specific areas of your life is God calling you to rebuild or demolish in order to create a stronger foundation?

What specific steps will you take this week to begin true inward transformation?

Rebuilding with you for the Kingdom,

The H4H Team
